There are 4 genera and 14 species. One genus, Euscorpius, with 6 species, is found throughout southern (Mediterranean) Europe and has been variously divided into 3 subgenera and numerous subspecies. The other genera in this family are found in eastern Mexico and Guatemala. Megacormus and Plesiochactas are closely related epigean forms. The two species of Troglocormus are troglobitic, having lost the median eyes, and are found only in caves.

This family contains two genera (each with its own subfamily) of small, tropical, forest-dwelling scorpions from Africa and Madagascar. Traditionally placed in the family Buthidae, their inclusion together in a separate family bears re-evaluation.
