larvae (Fig. 16.3) develop in decaying fruits, vegetables, and other plant material, decomposing animal carcasses, and excrement. Oniy a few human cases of intestinal myiasis involving H, illucens have been documented. At least one case resulted in rather severe enteric disturbances, apparently due to the large size and vigorous activity of the larvae (James, 1947).
