612 called a mixocoel (hemocoel). From mesodermal cells at the dorsal junction of the somatic and splanchnic walls of the labial to the tenth abdominal somites, a sheet of cardioblasts develops. As the mesoderm grows around the gut, the sheets on each side become apposed to form the heart. Other somatic mesoderm cells adjacent to the cardioblasts differentiate as alary muscles, pericardial septum, and pericardial cells. The aorta develops from the median walls of the antennal somites, which become apposed and grow posteriorly to meet the heart.

In embryos of insects where the somites remain solid or are not formed as discrete segmental structures, the mesoderm still gives rise to the same components.
