Paedogenesis

Though not actually a form of embryonic development, paedogenesis, that is, precocious sexual maturation ofjuvenile stages, is conveniently mentioned here. Paedogenesis is usually associated with both parthenogenesis and viviparity, and, probably, is best shown in certain Cecidomyiidae, though it is known to occur also in some Chironomidae (Diptera), Coleoptera, and Hemiptera. In some cecidomyiids, the oocytes develop viviparously in the hemocoel of the last larval or pupal instar. In some chironomids, embryonic development begins in female pupae. In the viviparous hemipteran Hesperoctenes female larvae that have been inseminated hemocoelically develop embryos within their ovarioles. In an extreme situation seen in some aphids, development of young may begin in the mother while she herself is still in here own mother's reproductive system!
