Water, an essential constituent of living organisms, is obviously an important determinant of their distribution and abundance. Active organisms must retain within their body a certain proportion of water in order for metabolism to occur normally. Deviation from this proportion for any length of time may result in injury or death. For some terrestrial insects, especially those from regions with striking dry and wet seasons, moisture may also serve as a token stimulus for seasonally regulated processes (but see below).
