Identification: Sc complete. Costa broken near humeral cross vein. Oral vibrissae weakly developed. Eyes slightly pubescent. Postvertical bristles widely separated and diverging.

Adults of this small group are quite rare but have been taken on rotting fungi and carrion from Massachusetts to Oregon and Alaska. Acartophthalmus nigrinus (Zetterstedt), a widely distributed species, is about 2 mm., blackish, with the front coxae and halteres yellowish.
