Subfamily Crabroninae. This group includes 2 tribes of ground-nesting wasps, the Crabronini (square-headed wasps) and Oxybelini (spiny digger wasps); Crabronini are quite common but Oxybelini are rather rare. Most Crabronini are black with yellow markings, and 8-20 mm.; head and eyes are large, antennae rise very low on face, there is only 1 submarginal cell in the front wing, and apex of marginal cell is truncate. Different species use different types of prey in provisioning their nests.
