Identification: Body shape generally oval, sometimes (Emesinae, see illus., p. 121) greatly elongate and resembling a walkingstick. Beak short, 3-segmented, usually curved and fitting into a groove in prosternum. Head elongate, a transverse groove between eyes. Antennae 4-segmented, sometimes with 1 or more segments divided into subsegments. Ocelli usually present (absent in Emesinae). Front femora generally thickened. Edges of abdomen often extend laterally beyond wings.
