EARWIGFLIES Family Meropeidae Identification: Ocelli absent (present in other Mecoptera). Wings relatively broad, Rs and M with 5 or more branches. Tarsi with 2 claws.

This group is represented in N. America by a single rare species, Merope tuber Newman, which occurs in the East Coast states from Georgia to se. Canada. This insect is 10-12 mm., and the male has forcepslike terminal abdominal appendages that resemble the cerci of earwigs (see illus., p. 99).
