Members of this group vary in appearance. The most common species are 10-15 mm. and wasplike, with the 3rd antennal segment elongate. Others are brownish or metallic blue-black, often less than 10 mm., and some have the 3rd antennal segment rather rounded, with a long style or an arista. Adults are usually found on flowers. Larvae occur in a variety of situations: some are aquatic, some live in decaying materials, and some are found in other situations.
