Identification: Similar to Lygaeidae but without ocelli and with more veins in membrane of FW. Front femora never thickened. 8-18 mm. Usually brightly colored with red and black.

Red bugs occur chiefly in the southern states and are sometimes fairly common. Most are elongate-oval and brightly colored. A few have short front wings and are somewhat antlike in appearance. All are plant feeders. The Cotton Stainer (PL 3), Dysdercus suturellus (Herrich-Schaffer), is a serious pest of cotton.
