Stem Sawflies

This is a small and relatively rare group. Adults resemble horn tails but are much smaller; larvae are parasites of metallic wood-boring beetles (Buprestidae).

STEM SAWFLIES Family Cephidae Identification: Pronotum in dorsal view trapezoidal, about as long as wide. Costal cell in FW lacking or very narrow. Abdomen somewhat flattened laterally.

Cephids are usually black and 9-13 mm. Larvae bore in the stems of various grasses and shrubs.
