Natural Enemies

Auchenorrhyncha are preyed upon by insectivorous vertebrates such as birds and lizards, as well as by invertebrate predators such as spiders, ants, assassin bugs, wasps, and robber flies. Auchenorrhyncha are also attacked by various parasitoids such as dryinid and chalcidoid wasps, epipyropid moths, pipunculid flies, strep sip terans, and nematodes. Because they feed on plant sap, cicadomorphans are not usually susceptible to infection by viral, bacterial, or protozoan pathogens. Thus, entomopathogenic fungi, which do not need to be ingested to infect insects, are the most important pathogens of Auchenorrhyncha.
