Highly Recommended

This e-book served its purpose to the maximum level. I am glad that I purchased it. If you are interested in this field, this is a must have.

The Case for Entomophagy among Dinosaurs

In all probability, almost every dinosaur, even those considered vegetarians, were in actuality omnivores at some point in their lives, certainly when they were in the rapid growth stages and possibly also during periods of egg production. You may question how we arrived at that conclusion, but even today characterizing an animal as an herbivore, omnivore, or carnivore is an almost impossible task, so we assume the same held true for dinosaurs. Few vertebrates are truly one or the other. For example, mammals begin their lives dependent on a food source rich in protein, mother's milk. Fruit- and nectar-eating birds feed bugs to their young, and because many insectivorous birds take fruits and seeds as well, most birds would be considered omnivores.133 So both mammals and birds start life eating animal proteins, and although some go on to become herbivores as adults, overall they could be classified as omnivores. Since some paleontologists consider birds living dinosaurs, the principle...

Description and biology

The male cheer pheasant has a striking appearance. The color of the plumage (covering of feathers) on its neck and upper back is silvery-gray. The feathers on its lower back are reddish. Its tail, measuring 18 to 24 (46 to 61 centimeters) inches long, is marked with heavy, dark bars. The male has an overall length of 35 to 47 inches (89 to 119 centimeters). Females are not so dramatically colored and are smaller, measuring 24 to 30 inches (61 to 76 centimeters) in length. This pheasant is mainly vegetarian (plant-eating). It digs for roots and seeds with its stout feet and beak. It also plucks at leaves, shoots, and berries on the ground or in shrubs.

When the ants will wake up

The Council of Europe voted recently an Invertebrate Charter. That is easy and costs nothing. That was why it got the unanimity. Protection of insects seems to them to be a duty, while the destruction of trees is tolerated. It is easy to vote for such a text while reckless destruction of habitats continues in Brazil, Borneo and elsewhere. The famous English naturalist Myriam Rothschild became a vegetarian in order to stop eating animals, but, if we must protect all living things, from panda to protozoa, we cannot give the same protection to all. If we do it, as wrote one day a veterinarian, it will become suicidal. Are we obliged to protect also malaria carrier mosquitoes or Chagas transmitting bugs as we protect the beetles or the butterflies of our forests British naturalists have proposed to

Orthopteroids

With the major exception of mantids and some species and groups (e.g., Decti-cinae) that occasionally take prey or feed on insect carcasses, orthopteroids are basically all vegetarians. Nymphs of some groups often visit flowers although they feed on petals and anthers, they may benefit the plant by effecting pollination (Schuster 1974).

Dicondylia

Lepidothrix Pilifera

Silverfish are similar to bristletails in gestalt but are more flattened they lack the distinctive hump of the latter group and, therefore, do not jump. Like bristletails, these primitively wingless insects have a long terminal filament between the cerci and a surface covering of scales (which are lost in Nicoletiidae and Maindroniidae) (Figures 5.1, 5.4). The biology of the order is superficially similar to that described for the Archaeognatha, including the occurrence of indirect sperm transfer via a spermatophore however, Zygentoma are mostly diurnal and omnivorous with the notable exception of the family Nicoletiidae, which is principally subterranean and vegetarian. Though they are not capable of jumping, silverfish are very agile and run swiftly, as anyone who has chased one across a kitchen counter or sink knows. In contrast to the Archaeognatha, the compound eyes are reduced or absent in Zygentoma, and most families except Lepidotrichidae lack ocelli entirely. Defining...
